Philly reunion? Eagles reportedly called the Bills asking about RB LeSean McCoy

With Jay Ajayi going on injured reserve with a torn ACL, the Philadelphia Eagles could use a new starting running back.

Maybe it’s their old starting running back.

WIVB sports director Josh Reed reported, citing a source, that the Eagles have reached out to the Buffalo Bills to ask about a possible trade for running back LeSean McCoy.

Perhaps there’s nothing to that rumor other than a call. It’s possible the 2-3 Bills aren’t ready to trade off their only reliable offensive piece, and it’s also no slam dunk the Eagles would ask whatever price the Bills would name. Maybe both sides will deny any call happened.

But it’s an interesting scenario.

LeSean McCoy could help the Eagles

The Eagles aren’t totally bare at running back without Ajayi. Corey Clement has been dealing with injuries this season, but he’s a good young player. Wendell Smallwood has done OK filling the Darren Sproles role, and Sproles could return soon too.

But if the Eagles can get McCoy from a Bills team that likely understands it’s rebuilding, why not?

McCoy is still a very good player, though he has dealt with his own injury issues this season. There’s also the question about what will come of multiple accusations against McCoy that include child abuse. McCoy hasn’t been charged with anything, but it’s impossible to predict what the NFL will do with punishment in those kinds of cases.

If the Eagles and Bills can work something out, the fit for McCoy will be familiar.

McCoy has a great history with the Eagles

McCoy, of course, is one of the greatest running backs in Eagles history. He played six seasons with the Eagles and was named All-Pro twice. He led the NFL in rushing for the Eagles in 2013.

McCoy, even at 30, still looks good. He made multiple Titans miss on a crucial third down last week to pick up a first down and set up a game-winning Bills field goal. It would be a risky move for the Eagles though. On the field, a 30-year-old running back is never a good bet to produce for a full season. Off the field, there’s a lot of allegations hanging over McCoy. Also, the Eagles could look into other running backs. Many have speculated that Steelers holdout Le’Veon Bell would be a great fit.

Maybe the McCoy deal never happens. Calls between NFL teams happen all the time; it doesn’t mean a trade will happen. But it’s an intriguing scenario, one that might give a boost to the Eagles after a 2-3 start.
