The stress of postseason baseball can drive fans to say some regrettable things. Each game carries an immense amount of pressure, so any one play can cause emotions to boil over. Before you know it, your friends and family are keeping their distance from you, the person cursing up a storm.
Baseball fans tend to swear quite with their favorite team’s season on the line. How do we know that? Because it’s been tracked. TickPick monitored Reddit’s baseball page throughout the entire 2018 Major League Baseball postseason to track how many times fans dropped f-bombs during games.
According to TickPick, the term “[expletive] you” was directed at the Yankees more than any other team, and Machado more than any other player.
The game that featured the most f-bombs was unsurprisingly Game 3 of the World Series. The game went 18 innings and set the record for the longest contest is World Series history. The word was used nearly 3,000 times during the game.
That game also produced the moment that led to the most f-bombs during the postseason. That would be Yasiel Puig’s 13th inning single that tied things up and ensured the game would keep going.
Machado kicking Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jesús Aguilar during the National League Championship Series came in second.
What may come as a surprise was the fanbase that dropped the most f-bombs during the postseason. No, it wasn’t Red Sox fans or Dodgers fans. It was Chicago Cubs fans.
Yep. Even though the Cubs only played one postseason game, Cubs fans still led all other fanbases with their use of the f-word, according to TickPick.
The Cubs lost the National League wild-card game to the Colorado Rockies in extras by just one run. That gave Cubs fans plenty of opportunities to yell obscenities about their favorite team.
The entire study by TickPick features more in depth information in case you’re curious about the other big moments that caused fans to drop their favorite four-letter word.
Machado and the Yankees probably won’t get much of a reprieve any time soon. Machado is expected to sign a massive contract in the offseason, meaning fanbases that miss out are not going to be happy.
If that massive deal with the Yankees, that would be the perfect storm of f-bombs that would render Reddit NSFW for weeks.
